Cavity / Caries Prevention

Dental cavities are holes that form in your tooth. Tooth cavities form due to tooth decay that happens over a long period. However, the tooth decay that leads to cavity formation can be interrupted and reversed to avert cavity formation.

Our mouths contain numerous numbers of bacteria some of which are beneficial while some can be dangerous- those that contribute to tooth decay. Tooth caries are caused by the acids produced by some bacteria from the sugars in the food we eat. It is these acids that cause tooth cavity over time. Below are some ways through which tooth caries may be prevented.

Primary prevention

Which aims at averting the developing of cavities. This may include the use of toothpaste that is fluoridated and reducing the consumption of sugars to lessen the risk of caries formation. Fluoride toothpaste will protect your enamel from losing critical minerals as well as reducing the ability of the bacteria to make acid. Other sources of fluoride include; mouth wash, tablets, and gels.

Secondary prevention

Which is the detection of possible cavity formation through diagnostic testing. If any sign of potential tooth decay is found, then the necessary prevention mechanisms are initiated to control and prevent the potential spread. It is, therefore, advisable to regular go for screening so that the caries is detected at an early stage where it is easier to control.

Tertiary prevention

Which is aimed at minimizing the impacts of tooth cavity by restoring teeth function with a purpose of averting complications related to the cavity. At this point, the most important thing is to find ways of improving the quality of life for the person suffering from caries. The doctor should recommend the use of composite fillings and amalgam as forms of tertiary prevention measures. Implants and bridges may also be used to replace missing teeth.

Reducing sugar intake would be the best way of reducing the risk of exposure to dental caries. However, sugar consumption marginally increases among individuals. You are therefore encouraged to change your feeding habits to limit the exposure to tooth decay. Below are some tooth-friendly tips you should embrace:

  • Limit fruit juice consumption.
  • Save sugary drinks, soda and sweets for special occasions.
  • Talk to your dentist about dental sealants.
  • Remove dental plaque.
  • Avoid eating sugars after brushing your teeth.
