If you are like most parents, you get excited when you baby starts to cut her first teeth. You want to see the little white speck on the gums, the grows into an actual tooth. Most babies teeth are white. If you baby’s teeth start to become discolored, you may become concerned, and want to know the reason why. There are a few different things that can cause you baby’s teeth to become discolored.
Inadequate Brushing
Even though you baby’s first teeth will fall out eventually, it is still important that you brush them thoroughly and regularly. If they are not brushed adequately, plaque can build up on the teeth, causing them to be discolored. If you start to brush more often, your baby’s teeth should be white again.
Medication
Certain medications can cause your baby’s teeth to be discolored. If you took the antibiotic tetracycline while you were pregnant, it can cause your baby’s teeth to be discolored. If you baby is taking a medication that contains iron, such as supplemental vitamins, it can also lead to discolored teeth.
Tooth Injury
A trauma to your baby’s teeth or gums can cause the teeth to become discolored. If the baby fell and hit their mouth, or are hit with an object, it can cause the teeth to develop a pink or gray tint.
Weak Enamel
Genetic problems with enamel formation can make your baby’s teeth prone to cavities and can also lead to discoloration.
Too Much Fluoride
The tap water from most city supplies contain fluoride. If you use tap water to make your baby’s liquid concentrated formula or powered formula, the excess fluoride can cause white marks or streaks on their teeth.
Newborn Jaundice
If your baby developed jaundice after birth, it can cause their teeth to have a green tint.
Serious Illness
While it is uncommon, a widespread infection, such as newborn hepatitis and certain types of heart disease can cause a baby’s teeth to become discolored.
If your baby’s teeth are discolored, there is a reason. In many cases, the problem can be resolved.
