Everything You Need to Know About Wisdom Teeth

12th December 2018, 9:22am EST

Wisdom teeth are the third set of permanent molars appearing between the latter part of the teenage years and young adulthood. If these teeth fail to emerge or come in at an angle, it could result in minor to severe difficulties. Issues with wisdom teeth are quite common, and there are different ways dental practitioners deal with them.

Tooth troubles…

When wisdom teeth come in crooked or remain concealed in the gums, it can cause pain and inflammation and difficulties in chewing properly, initially this can lead to halitosis as well as gastro maladies. If allowed to continue, decay and tooth loss can result from bacteria and mucus remaining on the teeth, even after brushing, causing the neighboring teeth to become affected.

What can be done…

A dentist will examine and take X-rays of the teeth to check on the oral health of the individual. This will help him or her to determine the severity of the general area, along with what further steps will need to be taken.

A warm salt-water solution might be recommended to provide relief for minor aches; however, antibiotics will be prescribed if there is tenderness or signs of swelling in the gums or jaw area. The teeth, which have failed to pass through the jaw tissue, will need special attention.

This could be making a small incision into the impacted area of the gum, to assist the teeth or tooth in making an appearance; an anesthetic is given so a person will be comfortable. If a person is suffering from swollen lymph nodes, fever, or headaches, the dental doctor will have to extract the tooth.

When experiencing problems with wisdom teeth, it is a good idea to get in touch with a dental doctor, so they will be able to help find the best solution to improve the quality of a person’s life.
