What Is Cosmetic Dentistry?

4th October 2019, 10:14am EST

Cosmetic dentistry refers to procedures that are intended to improve the teeth and smile of patients. Dentists can perform many procedures to treat teeth that are missing, chipped, misshapen, and discolored. These procedures allow dentists to close spaces, reshape teeth, alter the length of teeth, and restore short or worn teeth. Some common cosmetic dentistry procedures include bleaching, bonding, and veneers.

Bleaching

Bleaching is a popular and common procedure that dentists perform to whiten the teeth. Some people have their teeth bleached for a whiter shade while others bleach their teeth to remove stains. Cigarettes, medication, tea, and coffee can all discolor the enamel. Family history and age can also make discoloration more likely.

Bonding

Bonding refers to a procedure when dentists use composite filling material to either change the color of the teeth or fill in gaps. A dentist can complete this procedure in just one office visit and the bonding will last for a few years. If the teeth are decayed or chipped, the dentist may use bonded composite resins. Dentists also use bonding to fill small cavities. Bonding can fill spaces between teeth or change the color and shape of teeth by covering the outside surface entirely.

Crowns

Crowns, which are also referred to as caps, are used by dentists to restore the natural shape and appearance of teeth. In comparison to other methods, crowns are very costly. Therefore, dentists only use crowns when other procedures may not be effective. The life expectancy of crowns is longer than that of any other cosmetic restorations.

Veneers

Veneers, which are thin pieces of plastic or porcelain, are placed over the front of the teeth to change the shape or color. Dentists use veneers to fix teeth that are discolored, chipped, crooked, unevenly spaced, or oddly spaced. Veneers are a common alternative to bonding.

Without a doubt, a beautiful smile can do much for your appearance as well as your confidence. Fortunately, no matter the issue with your teeth, there are procedures that will help you achieve the gorgeous smile you deserve.
